There was a time, now past, where it was known that children were the greatest uses of public open space. But in many cities the children have disappeared from public parks. Many parks seem to be relatively unused much of the time – however we must not forget the benefit of just being able to look out at a green open space. The reasons for the non-use of public parks are many and varied, from the institutionalisation of childhood, lack of time by young parents, time taken up watching television, videos and playing computers.

Toys and toy design originated as a craft rather than a serious act of design or high art. Another stream of modern “design” for play is the corporate and individual design of large play items to be set up for collective play – for everybody’s children – in outdoor playgrounds. Originally these items would be produced by small local firms who worked with metal such as welding firms and smithies. After the Second World War companies began to expand their business and some became national and international.
