Note: if an entire class or grade level in the high school has been assigned a research project on the same topic and information can be found in the World Almanac, the library will need to have multiple copies of this work. Inexpensive paperback copies are available, but they will not hold up over a long period of time. A geographical dictionary or gazetteer is also considered a basic reference tool. As with other reference works, the coverage and price of such an item varies, but inexpensive editions are available.

Professor, author, and editor Blanche Woolls believes it would be “an interesting experiment for the high school librarian and the public librarian to join forces to buy expensive reference books and have them available in the public library in the summer even if they are on school shelves during the school year” (e-mail to the author). She suggests that the school district and public library could share the cost of these materials and leave them in the public library where they would be accessible in the evening when the school library is closed.
