Mais aussi, et à plus distinctiveness raison, «dans le vaste et informe mouvement de contestation» empreint d’idéologie et, par là même, sujet à toutes les récupérations ou manipulations possibles. The British and Indian force had advanced to the crest of Chestnut Ridge before turning back east toward the French encampment. The warrior’s testimony reveals just how much Washington relied on the expertise of his allies. Significantly, the Iroquois “directed Col. Washington with his Men to go up to the Hill” (a rocky ledge overlooking the camp); the Half King and other warriors went to the left to block a French exit, while the Iroquois leader Monacatootha and another warrior named Cherokee Jack led others to the right.

During the summer and early fall of 1754, British ministers had analyzed such a plan proposed by the Board of Trade and raised the possibility of proposing a bill calling for it before Parliament. ”46 The decision to send regular regiments from Ireland also reflected a fundamental distrust of colonial Americans’ military abilities and worth. The ministry rejected those voices that preferred regimenting the Americans under their own officers in order to encourage recruitment and stoke the loyalties of ambitious colonials; and it disapproved Dinwiddie’s request for blank royal commissions—“as was done in the Expedition to Carthagena”—that would have produced a “greater Equallity” between American and British officers.
