27). These structures, formed by invasion of young roots by fungal hyphae, are symbiotic associations between nonpathogenic or weakly pathogenic fungi and living cells of roots. Most mycorrhizae fall into two broad groups—the ectotrophic forms which exist both inside and outside the root, and the endotrophic forms which exist entirely within the host cells. These associations always form in the cortical cells of the host roots and do not extend into the endodermis or stele. Ectotrophic mycorrhizae occur in many economically important trees.

Armoora, Caropa, and Héritier a have similar air roots (Groom and Wilson, 1925). Some species have vertical " k n e e " roots (Fig. 33). The origin of these varies somewhat among species. Roots of baldcypress develop vertical knees because of active, localized cambial activity that adds thick layers of wood on the upper surfaces of roots. In Bruguiera and Ceriops the knees arise from upward growth of a horizontal root until it emerges from the soil. In Avicennia marina the knees arise as lateral branches of horizontal roots, which, after growing upward for some time turn down ward, reenter the soil and then grow horizontally (McCusker, 1971).
